The Gak-1 protein distinguishes autosomes from the X chromosome. An antibody against the Gak-1 protein preferentially binds the autosomes and is excluded from the X chromosome. This correlates with an increase in recombination on autosomes and a decrease on the X chromosome. We are further investigating the role of Gak-1 in crossover regulation.
